Cleanser to SPF: My Guide to Getting the Order Right

Hey friends! 👋

If you're anything like me, you've probably stood in front of the bathroom mirror staring at your lotions and potions, wondering: "Wait… do I put moisturiser on first or sunscreen? And where do my serums even fit in?"

I've been there. So let me clear this up once and for all, because your skin deserves better than guesswork.

The Simple Rule I Live By

Here's the golden rule that changed everything for me: lightest to thickest. That's it! Your watery, thin products go on first, and your rich, creamy ones go on last. This way, everything absorbs properly and nothing sits awkwardly on top of your skin doing nothing useful.

My Morning Routine (Step by Step)

Let me walk you through what I do every single morning using some of my favourite products from Plantasy:

1. Cleanser – I start my day with the Plantasy Gel Cleanser. It's gentle, doesn't strip my skin, and leaves me with a fresh, clean canvas.

2. Toner – I don't always do this, but when I do, I just pat it on gently. It preps my skin for everything that follows.

3. Water-based serums – This is where the magic happens. Things like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, or niacinamide go here. These are thin and absorb quickly.

4. Moisturiser – I reach for the Plantasy Moisturising Day Cream – Carrot & B5. It locks in all that good stuff from my serums, and the carrot + B5 combo leaves my skin feeling nourished and happy.

5. Face oil (anhydrous serum) – Yep, this goes after moisturiser! I use the Plantasy Face Oil – Rosehip Extract & Squalane. Here's why: oils are occlusive, meaning they create a barrier that seals everything in. If I put oil before moisturiser, that barrier would actually block my moisturiser from absorbing properly. So oil goes on top.

6. Eye cream – I gently pat on the Plantasy Eye Cream – Caffeine & Green Tea Extract. The caffeine helps depuff (goodbye, morning eyes!) and the green tea is so soothing. I apply this after my face oil because eye creams are usually richer and I want them to sit undisturbed around that delicate area.

7. Sunscreen (SPF) – And this, my friend, goes last. No exceptions.

Wait, Oil After Moisturiser? 🤔

I used to think face oil = serum = goes on early. But nope! An anhydrous serum (which is basically a fancy name for a face oil without water) is occlusive. It forms a protective seal over your skin. So if you want your moisturiser to actually sink in, apply it before your oil.

Quick example: Think of it like a sandwich. Your moisturiser is the filling – it needs to touch the bread (your skin) directly. The oil is like cling wrap on top, sealing everything in. That's exactly what the Plantasy Face Oil does – it locks in the goodness of the Carrot & B5 Day Cream beautifully.

Why I Never Mess With the SPF Order ☀️

Here's the thing – I used to think sunscreen was just another cream, so surely it doesn't matter where it goes, right? Wrong.

Sunscreen (especially chemical ones) needs to sit directly on your skin to form an even protective film. If I slap moisturiser on top of it, I'm basically ruining that protection. The SPF gets diluted, the film breaks apart, and suddenly I'm walking around thinking I'm protected when I'm really not. No thank you!

The only exception I've heard about is mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide ones), where some people apply it before moisturiser to avoid pilling. But honestly? Most derms still say SPF comes last. I trust the derms.

The Cheat Sheet I Keep Handy

Final Thoughts

Look, skincare is supposed to be fun, not stressful. Once you remember:

  • Lightest to thickest

  • Oil after moisturiser

  • SPF always last

…you're pretty much set. Your products will absorb better, your sunscreen will actually work, and your skin will thank you. ✨

And if you're looking for clean, plant-based skincare that plays nicely together – you know where it comes from! Head over to plantasy.co.uk to check out the goodies I mentioned.

Happy glowing! 💛
